Getting selected as MC for the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs) is a big thing but actress/
presenter, Naa Ashorkor, says she “prepared hard” when tasked by Charterhouse
to steer affairs on the night of the biggest event on the Ghanaian
entertainment calendar.
The long
preparations, she told Showbiz in a chat on Friday, resulted in her
good delivery as MC despite being a “new comer”.
“VGMA is undoubtedly the
biggest event here in Ghana. It’s a day everyone irrespective of their social
background looks forward to and being selected as MC for the day is definitely
no child’s play. I really prepared very well for the day because I knew I
didn’t have just my brand to protect but that of the awards scheme as well”.
Being the only “newbie” among
the three with DJ Black and Chris Attoh, the Perfect Picture actress said she
was a bit nervous but the confidence reposed in her by the organisers,
Charterhouse, as well as some “elders” she looked up to in the industry were
enough inspiration for her to put up a good show.
“My secret was just to be
myself and not anyone else on stage. I wanted the audience to see Naa Ashorkor
and not anyone else and I’m happy I didn’t disappoint all the people who had
faith in me,” she said.
She is no
“stranger” to hosting some of the biggest events in Ghana. For instance, she
has hosted the Malaika pageants and the VGMA Red Carpet in
previous years and has been host of The Zoneon Starr FM. But all
the while, Naa Ashorkor said, “I was training to take up the big shot one day”.
A “fulfilled experience” as she
describes it, Naa said given the chance, she would love to host the VGMAs
again. “I love the positive feedback and I’m humbled by it. It took a lot of
preparations and prayers and I’m happy people appreciate the effort,” she
stated.
Away from the VGMA,
she also spoke of the growing interest in theatre now. She, as a lover of
theatre has cast in many plays including Vagina Monologue and Don’t Dress for Christmas.
Naa Ashorkor, who
has featured in many movies including Scorned and Adams Apples is currently working on the Starr Woman project.
“It is an initiative which
seeks to empower young women entrepreneurs to believe in the beauty of their
dreams and go after them. The first edition was a huge success and the second
is expected to come off on July 29 of this year,” she stated.
Currently, she is
preparing for her new play, What happened to Courtship which is slated for the National
Theatre on Saturday, May 21.
